You know, I still kind of feel like a newcomer to NY in some ways. When I first arrived, I didn't know one train from the next and I hated reading maps for some reason--before I had only used them for long road trips. I mean, nothing says 'Not a New Yorker' more than a pulling out one of those large subway maps. Anyway, to save face and still navigate my way, I often use Hopstop. It gives multiple routes and often provides 360 degree views of surrounding areas--and I really like the big 'Walk that way' arrow.
